Korea and Saudi Arabia are strengthening cooperation in their culture and tourism sectors.
Yoo Jin-ryong, Korean minister of culture, sports and tourism, met Saudi Arabian cultural heads to discuss ways of expanding cultural exchanges between the two countries during his visit to Riyadh, its capital city, on Nov. 24.
Yoo suggested the joint production of international documentaries, as part of broadcasting content cooperation, to Abdulaziz bin Mohieddin Khoja, Saudi Arabian minister of culture and information.
Given the growing popularity of the Korean drama series, “The Jewel in the Palace” and “Le Grand Chef” in Saudi Arabia, Yoo stressed the importance of expanding the cultural exchanges for both sides. Korea was invited as the guest of honor at the Janadriyah National Festival for Heritage and Culture there last year to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Also, the Korean minister proposed exhibition exchanges of the national museums of the two countries in a meeting with Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, secretary-general of the Supreme Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA)
Al Saud requested a Korean craft exhibition in his country when he visited Korea to sign an agreement to exchange and train craftsmen in their respective countries in May.
The “Hidden Match ― An Exhibition of Korean Craft,” supported by the Korean culture ministry and the Korea Craft and Design Foundation (KCDF), opened at the National Museum of Saudi Arabia on Nov. 24 and will continue for one month.
The Korean government is planning to dispatch craftsmen to the Arab country and hold international seminars on crafts next year. Also, following the Korean show there, the “Saudi Archaeological Masterpieces through the Ages” exhibition will be held in Korea in 2015.
한국과 사우디아라비아가 문화산업과 관광 분야에서 교류와 협력을 더욱 강화해 나가기로 했다. 유진룡 문화체육관광부 장관은 24일 오전(현지 시간) 사우디아라비아 리야드에서 압둘아지즈 빈 모하에딘 코자 사우디아라비아 문화공보부 장관과 술탄 빈 살만 빈 압둘아지즈 빈 알 사우드 사우디아라비아 관광·문화재위원장을 잇따라 만나 이 같은 협력 방안에 대해 논의했다.
유 장관은 모하에딘 코자 장관과의 만남에서 양국간의 문화산업 콘텐츠 교류 및 협력 강화와 방송사간 다큐멘터리 국제 공동제작을 통한 방송문화교류 활성화 방안을 제안했다.
한국이 지난해 2월 양국수교 50주년 기념 자나드리아 문화축제에 주빈국으로 참여했고, '대장금'과 '식객' 등 한국 드라마의 현지 인기가 높아지는 현실을 감안해 교류의 폭을 더 넓혀가자는 것이다.
알 사우드 위원장과는 관광, 문화유산, 공예 분야에 대해 이야기를 나눴다.
유 장관은 양국 간 관광 교류 협력 확대를 위한 실무협의회를 구성하고, 유네스코 문화유산 협력 강화 및 박물관 교류를 확대하자고 말했다.
특히 사우디아라비아 국립박물관과 한국 국립박물관의 교환전시 추진을 희망했으며, 지난 5월 체결한 한-사우디 관광·공예 실행계획서에 따라 양국 간의 공예분야 교류 확대와 활성화 방안에 대한 의견도 전했다.
알 사우드 위원장은 지난 5월 내한해 사우디아라비아에서 한국공예전을 개최해달라고 공식 초청한 바 있다. 이에 따라 사우디아라비아에서 열리는 첫 한국공예전이 24일 사우디아라비아 국립박물관 기획전시실에서 개막해 한 달간 열린다.
현재 문체부는 양국 공예교류를 위해 내년도 공예인 상호 연수·파견과 공예 관련 국제 세미나 교류 방안을 추진하고 있다. 내년 또는 2015년에 한국에서 사우디아라비아 공예전을 개최하는 안도 기획하고 있다.
