An anti-deportation protester confronted President Barack Obama, saying his family has been separated for 19 years and urged him to use executive powers to help immigrants living illegally in the United States, AP reported.
The young man was standing behind Obama during the president's speech Monday, part of a selected audience that served as the backdrop to the San Francisco event.
The man was later determined to be a 24-year-old South Korean by the name of Hong Ju.
It came to light during an ensuing investigation that Hong’s family moved to the United States illegally when he was 11 years old.
Hong told secret service agents that burglars broke into his home in California in 2010 but could not report the incident to police for fear of being discovered as illegal immigrants.
In his speech, the president renewed his call for Congress to overhaul immigration laws.
The protester and another heckler yelled, quote, “Stop deportations!”
Obama countered that he must obey existing laws and cannot change them on his own. He said the easy way out is to yell and pretend that he can do something by violating current law.
Obama told his security detail to leave the protester and the heckler alone.

오바마 대통령의 연설이 끝날 무렵 연단 뒤에 있던 홍씨는 '미국 내 1150만명에 이르는 불법 이민자들의 추방을 멈추기 위해 제발 당신의 행정 권한을 행사하라'고 소리쳤다. 현지 언론에 따르면 홍씨는 11세에 가족과 함께 미국으로 이민을 와 현재 캘리포니아주(州) 앨러미다에 살고 있다. 2010년 그의 집에 강도가 들었지만 불법 이민자라는 사실이 발각될까 봐 경찰에 신고하지 못했다. 그는 친척들을 보기 위해 한국을 방문하고 싶지만 미국으로 다시 들어올 수 없다는 생각에 출국하지 못하고 있다.
오바마 대통령은 홍씨에게 '이민 문제는 소리 지르는 것만큼 쉬운 문제가 아니다. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 설득이 필요하다'고 말했다. 그러나 청중들은 '추방을 멈춰라. 우린 할 수 있다'고 소리치며 장내가 소란해졌다고 현지 언론이 전했다.
오바마 대통령은 경호원들이 청중들을 퇴장시키려 하자 이를 제지한 뒤 '가족을 생각하는 열정을 존중한다'고 말했다.
