The brain becomes more active and alert at the thought of making money, a study shows.

Washington University researchers tested 16 participants, using MRI scans to record activity in particular parts of the brain.

Participants’responses were faster when they realized financial compensation might be involved, with activity in the prefrontal cortex increasing.

The part of the brain that manages awareness and synchronization also became more active when participants were told they would be paid if they solved a particular problem.

“When someone bets on sports, games and poker, the brain works quickly to make a strategy to earn compensation, which shows a strong obsession,” the research team concluded.
