Monster rock, 400 times the City of London, hurtling past Earth this week

Scientists are trying to find a way to protect Earth from the giant rocks which travel around the Milky Way.

Run out of Berlin with funds from the EU, the NEOShield project, which will look for a way to protect earth from the space rocks, is expected to take three years to complete, the Daily Mail reported on Jan. 27

Some of the ideas being tossed around at the moment include repelling asteroids with projectiles or explosives or using gravity to change its course.

The project though is a little late as a chunk of rock 400 times the City of London is set to hurtle closer than a rock of its size has in a very long time.
The asteroid labeled ‘(433) Eros’ measures 19 by 8 by 8 miles and is set to pass by next week.

Despite its massive size, the cosmic rock shouldn’t be too cause too much of a threat as it is on a circular path far outside the moon's orbit.

A smaller bus-sized asteroid is also set to pass extremely close to Earth today.

The asteroid 2012 BX34, will pass within 36,750 miles of Earth at about 3:30 p.m. Friday, tweeted astronomers with NASA's Asteroid Watch program.

Even though this is more than five times closer than the moon, at 11 meters wide, it won’t be any threat to earth.

‘It wouldn't get through our atmosphere intact even if it dared to try,’ Asteroid Watch scientists tweeted.

Nevertheless, with NASA estimating that there are almost one thousand asteroids over one kilometer in length and 19,500 over 100-meters, scientists at the Institute of Planetary Research are trying to find a way to protect Earth.

우주에서 우리 은하계를 떠도는 거대한 암석이 지구를 향해 돌진 중이며 이르면 이번 주 지구를 아슬아슬하게 지나갈 것으로 알려진 가운데, 독일 등 일부 유럽 국가들이 소행성이나 암석 등으로부터 지구를 보호하기 위한 프로젝트를 시작했다.

영국 일간지 데일리메일의 27일자 보도에 따르면 ‘(433)Eros’라 이름 붙여진 거대한 암석이 현재 지구를 향해 돌진 중이며, 이는 금주 중 지구를 지날 것으로 예측되고 있다.

런던보다 무려 400배 더 큰 것으로 알려진 이 암석이 지구와 충돌할 경우 엄청난 재앙이 닥칠 것으로 전문가들은 보고 있다.

이에 앞서 미국시간으로 27일 오후 3시 30분경에는 ‘2012 BX34’라 불리는 버스 크기의 소행성이 달보다 가까운 거리에서 지구를 스쳐 지나갔으나 다행히 지구에 큰 영향을 주지는 않았다.

그럼에도 불구하고 미국우주항공국(NASA)은 현재 지구를 향하고 있는 소행성은 1천 개 가까이 되며, 이러한 위험에서 지구를 구할 방법을 찾아야 한다고 목소리를 높이고 있다.

이에 베를린을 기점으로 하는 독일우주센터와 유럽연합집행기관이 기금을 모아 우주 소행성과 지구의 충돌을 방지하는 ‘네오쉴드프로젝트’(NEOShield Project)를 내놓았다.

유럽연합집행기관과 독일우주센터가 각각 400만 유로, 180만 유로를 모아 시작된 이 프로젝트는 최소 3년간 테스트 미션 기간이 필요하며, 그 사이 더 많은 기금이 모아진다면 2020년 정식으로 출범할 수 있을 것으로 기대되고 있다.

프로젝트를 이끄는 알랜 해리스 박사는 독일 시사주간지 슈피겔 온라인판과 한 인터뷰에서 “폭탄으로 소행성이나 암석의 방향을 바꾸는 방법이나, 중력을 이용해 지구 대기권 밖으로 끌어내는 방법 등 다양한 측면에서 연구중”이라고 설명했다.

이어 “하지만 우리는 아직까지 이론이나 실험실 내에서만 이러한 아이디어를 실행해 왔을 뿐, 실제 상황에 더 근접하게 다가가지 못했다.”면서 “프로젝트 성공을 위한 기금 모음이 매우 시급한 상황”이라고 덧붙였다.
