Drinking caffeinated beverages such as coffee and tea even six hours before bedtime can distort sleep, Wayne State University research shows, Physorg reports.

Researchers from the Michigan University studied the sleeping habits of 12 people who were given pills containing 400 milligrams of caffeine ¤Ñ equivalent to two or three cups of coffee.

Over four days, the participants took their doses six hours and three hours before bedtime and another before they went to sleep.

Two of the pills were placebos, with no caffeine, and on the last day all three were placebos.

The people who took the caffeine pills three hours before going to bed had trouble falling asleep.

Those who took the pills six hours before bedtime still lost an hour’s sleep.
