Research from St. Michaels College in Toronto shows children can become obese due to their parents’ stress.
The research team surveyed children on how they dealt with parental stress for a month period. Their weights were measured before and after the study.
Results showed children under parents with higher stress levels had a two percent higher BMI (body-mass-index) than those who had less stressful parents. Throughout the study, on average, children gained 7 percent more weight.
“While the figures may sound low, they are significant because they are happening in children, whose bodies are still developing, along with their eating and exercise habits,” said the study’s lead author, Ketan Shankardass, Ph.D. “If the weight gain continues over a lifetime, it could lead to serious obesity and health issues.”
When parents are stressed, they are more likely to purchase unhealthy food, and because of their parents’ stress, children are more likely to eat more and exercise less, notes the research.
“Childhood is a time when we develop interconnected habits related to how we deal with stress, how we eat and how active we are,” Shankardass said. “It’s a time when we might be doing irreversible damage or damage that is very hard to change later.”
The study has been published in the Pediatric Obesity journal.
